LYNDON JOHNSON’S PHOTOGRAPHER

Born in Yonkers in 1915, Okamoto, who also went by Oke, served as both a still and motion-picture photographer in the U.S. Army during the Second World War, after which he joined the United States Information Agency. He met Lyndon Johnson on a trip to Berlin in 1961. Following the assassination of President Kennedy, Okamoto became Lyndon Johnson’s official White House photographer.

Dr. Hans Petschar studied History and German Literature at the University of Salzburg. He has published in the fields of Visual History, Public History, Library History and Contemporary Austrian History and lectured at the Universities of Salzburg and Vienna. Since 2002 he has served as the Director of the Picture Archives and Graphics Department at the Austrian National Library. He is the representative of the Austrian National Library at the Board of Directors of European National Librarians.
