A Summer in Innsbruck
Center Austria was able to lend financially support to two University of New Orleans students participating in the UNO-Innsbruck Summer School program 2024. They received assistance through travel funds generously donated by the Deutsches Haus of New Orleans.
Here are their impressions:
The Alpine/Glacier Climate Change class took a field trip the first week to a glacier in Austria! It was definitely one of the highlights the program. We were 10,531 ft high! As an Earth and Environmental Science major at UNO, going to a glacier (before it's too late) has always been a dream of mine and this program made it come true! It was like nothing I have ever experienced before, especially being from down south where it doesn't ever get below 20 degrees! I will never forget the time I went to a glacier!
I spent one weekend in Verona and Venice, Italy. This photo was taken in front of the Verona Arena where a big opera festival was about to take place, which we unfortunately missed. We spent the day exploring Verona's markets, churches and food. We ended the day with delicious authentic gelato which is how I usually ended my days anywhere in Europe. Having the opportunity to jump on a two hour train ride to Italy was something I never thought I'd get and will never forget. Thanks to the Innsbruck Summer program, I got to explore my places I've always wanted to see.

Studying abroad in Innsbruck was an incredible experience. One of the things I enjoyed most was walking around the city. Innsbruck is where everything feels accessible, whether on foot or by tram, making exploration a joy. I enjoyed visiting the nearby cafés and bakeries and immersing myself in the local culture. The first week was packed with adventure, after hiking up the mountains surrounding the city, I had the experience of riding down on mountain carts. It was a thrilling way to enjoy the alpine scenery. Hiking became one of my favorite activities, with the highlight of Stubaier Top of Tyrol, where the views were amazing.
The city’s rich history and culture were also a significant draw for me. I participated in a scavenger hunt that allowed me to tour the city in a fun and interactive way, helping me get to know the area quickly. I spent time exploring various museums and historical sites, with Schloss Ambras being my favorite. The castle’s beautiful architecture, combined with the fascinating exhibits, offered a deep dive into the region's history. On the weekends, I traveled to nearby cities and countries to broaden my experience further. Additionally, my academic experience was equally rewarding. My classes were engaging, and I learned a lot, making the entire experience in Innsbruck both educational and enriching.
